U High: AKA University Laboratory School - LSU
For our visitors' benefit, we should point out that our alma mater, University High School, is part of a bigger campus known as Louisiana State University, LSU. We were taught by student teachers from the LSU Department of Education. That fact could explain a lot since LSU has always ranked in the Top Ten Party Schools in the nation! Being a part of LSU had many benefits. The most notable is the fact that U High students were issued "student passes" to all LSU athletic events. We had our own "student section" in Tiger Stadium and never missed a home football game. We were there when LSU won the National Championship in 1958, and we were there when Billy Cannon returned a punt against Ole Miss for 89 yards in 1959 to win the Heisman Trophy. I can assure anyone who reads this that we were ALL there in spirit last football season, closely following the Bayou Bengals, as Coach Nick Saban led them to another National Championship with a victory over Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. Anyone who thinks that USC ended up #1 probably thinks that Al Gore is President... and that he invented the Internet!
Our beloved LSU Tigers reclaimed the National Championship last season. But not without controversy. USC believes their Trojans deserve a share of the title because they finished first in one of the polls. In 1958, Iowa made a similar claim as they finished in first place in one national poll. The 2004 season will prove, once and for all, who the undisputed King of Football really is... as the mighty Tigers roll once more. So, buckle up and get ready for some football! The next few pages of this section offer more insight and perspective as we look back on the final days of the season. We'll review the events in sequence as they unfold. We'll even get to the bottom of the USC controversy. There can only be one #1 team in college football. I'm confident you'll agree (after seeing our reports from USC)... that team is our own LSU Tigers.
