Telling It Like It Is!
"Don't waste your money or your time.  Let Maureen do it for you!"
KILL BILL VOL. 1

This should be “Kill Quinton Tarantino” ... what an awful movie.
A total rip-off!  Not only does it start in the middle of the story,
but it doesn’t have an ending – the audience is forced to see the
next volume.  Blood and senseless violence is what you’ll see in
this film.  I’m all for new ideas and movies with an edge, but this
is ridiculous!  So, stay home and watch something on HBO.
THE SCHOOL OF ROCK

Now, this was fun ... haven't we all had fantacies of being in a
band?  And let's face it, Jack Black can spaz better than anyone
I've seen (well, other than Joe Cocker).

I liked it, it made me laugh, and I didn't think about the unopened
mail on the counter or the dog needing a bath!  I just sat back and
enjoyed.  You will too.
THE RUNDOWN

Surprisingly, it wasn't that bad.  Christopher Walken happens to
be a favorite of mine, so I enjoyed watching him do his thing.  I've
heard that "The Rock" did his own stunts for this film, and if true,
that's pretty impressive.

The movie is kind of a no-brainer but the foley artists must have
worked overtime ... it's quite loud.

I wouldn't bring the little ones - there is quite a bit of violence.
Hey, it's really a guy film.
UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN
Lovely as ever, Diane Lane plays a writer with a serious block
who, at a party, finds out that her husband is cheating.  The rest
of the story is about as original...though the footage shot in
Tuscany does make one want to purchase a ticket on-line ASAP.

The wounded Frances (Diane Lane) finds herself buying an
ancient villa in Tuscany, recovering from her divorce, making new
friends, etc. Nothing exceptional in this film except the number of
agonizing facial expressions from Ms. Lane...she does a great
"Frustrated Face," and an even better "Sexually Satisfied Face" but
that's about all we see of her acting talents.

It's a chick-flick for sure, and it was cute...but that's about it.  If
you like watching fantasy and are not bothered with loose ends
and a few reality facts, you'll enjoy it.
LOST IN TRANSLATION
A trimmed down Bill Murray plays a once-popular-American
actor whose latest job is promoting a Japanese whiskey in
Tokyo - just for the money.  Enter young, bored American girl
looking for something more interesting than her photographer
husband with whom she has tagged along to Tokyo for the ride.

Stuck in a foreign land where language barriers abound, these
two find themselves selfishly giving in to their own needs
lending new meaning to the "May (or March)-December
Romance." The audience seemed to beg for some humor from
Mr. Murray, but even the karaoke scene couldn't bring forth a
chuckle.  Some may find the film poignant and a breakthrough
for Bill Murray.  I just found it to be an hour and forty minutes
of watching an old guy and a young girl flirt with infidelity.
SECONDHAND LIONS

Oh, yeah!  This is a good one – I'm thinking Oscar here.  Who
wouldn't love Michael Caine and Robert Duval?  It's a perfect
match for this wonderful story.  If you've seen the trailers, let
me tell you – they represent only a fraction of the story.

There are wonderful messages in the movie, and the script is
beautifully written – the casting, masterful.  This one is a "Must
See."  So girls, grab your husband (he'll love it) and your kids,
too.  Much better than anything else currently showing!

I can't find anything wrong with this one.  I'd like to see it again.
ANYTHING ELSE

If you've seen any Woody Allen movie, you've seen this one.
It's the usual Billie Holiday music, neurotic New Yorkers and
dysfunctional relationships.  As Dobel, Woody Allen is his
usual self,  talking endlessly about nothing and wearing down
my last nerve.

Though George enjoyed it, I walked away with absolutely
nothing except a headache.
THE FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS

It's difficult to put a new spin on an old story, but this movie
manages to keep the audience's interest.  Though Cuba
Gooding, Jr.'s talents reach far beyond this role, he is
delightful, as is Beyonce Knowles.

The movie is loaded with soul-stirring gospel music, and you'll
be tapping your toes along with them.  It's impossible not to.
DICKIE ROBERTS:  Former Child Star
While this movie says it all in the title, it did the trick for us.
George and I were in serious need of getting out of the house,
and this movie was the only new one out.  Let me say from
the beginning, we didn't have huge expectations, but we did
find ourselves laughing out loud at some of the antics.  David
Spade is perfect for the role, and you'll see many of the '70's
sitcom stars all grown up (and not so well, I'm afraid).

Despite the silliness, this movie actually has a message for us -
one we'd do well to keep in mind as we stress out over stupid
things.  It wasn't bad - we laughed and that's worth the $7.50
for me!
MATCHSTICK MEN

I like Nicholas Cage, though when I see him on the screen
these days, I can't help thinking about his brief marriage to
Lisa Marie Presley and what they may have talked about
over morning coffee....

But, "The Cage" does what he does best, playing a neurotic
germaphobe/con-artist who chain smokes and cleans.  Yep,
it's OCD on the big screen.  This is a sleek film with many
twists and turns - I didn't particularly like the ending, but it is a
"worth it" film.  Besides, Nicholas Cage can freak out better
than any actor alive - it's fun just to watch his body language!
SEABISCUIT:  The Movie
If you are not already in love with Tobey Maguire, you will be
after this movie.  Don’t be embarrassed if you find yourself
galloping in your seat – it’s that good.  No, the horse doesn’t die
in the end but you may need a tissue or two ... at least the guy
next to me did. It’s a “feel good” flick.  See it.
The Book
Before the book, I knew nothing about horseracing or Seabiscuit.
This book is packed with information about the life of jockeys,
trainers and the important role this horse played in American
history.  Did you know The National Weather Service received
more calls on the day of Seabiscuit’s momentous race than in their
entire history of public service?  You’ll learn so much from this
story ... It’s a must read!
GIGLI:  The Movie

This movie should be renamed “When Ben Met Jen.”  It’s their
love story caught on tape ... movie-goers forget the plot to focus
on Jennifer’s buttocks, which seem to defy gravity.  Affleck and
Lopez seem to share a repertoire of four facial expressions – all
of them boring.  Too many tight shots and not enough good
acting, plus a stale script make me give this film a HUGE thumbs
down!
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

You’ll forgive Johnny Depp his checkered past when you see this
film.  Those smokey eyes and his chocolaty voice will make you
forget about whatever was bugging you on your way to the theatre.

Industrial Light and Magic worked their magic on this big-budget
movie.  The special effects are nothing short of incredible – your
mind won’t have a chance to wander.   You may have been to
Disney World but this movie is a totally different ride!  So much
talent went into the making of this movie – you’ll be hearing
“Pirates” again and again on Oscar night.

Was it worth the $7.50?  Absolutely…so grab your candy and go!
OPEN RANGE  (Big Hat – Little Movie)

It doesn’t really matter what the movie was about, you’ll be
counting the many plot flaws and loose ends before dozing off to
sleep.  As in his previous films, Costner needs a strong woman to
save him from himself … the sulking and pouting got on my
nerves as the story quickly went nowhere.  All we seem to know
is that he had some deep personal trauma and couldn’t bear to
talk about it.  He even goes so far as to involve a wounded
horse, an ageing dog and drowning puppy to get the audience’s
sympathy.  Even superman Robert Duval couldn’t pull this story
together.  We expect Duval to give a stellar performance but
even with all of his talent, the wheels fall right off of this one.
THE WHALE RIDER

George says if the story stirs your emotions, then it makes a
good movie ... hmmmmm.  I’m not sure about that, but I did
like this film.  This isn’t a mainstream film; however, the
performances are noteworthy and the storyline perhaps
touches a part of our lives we haven’t given much thought to
lately.   It’s a thinker – keep it on your list of movie
possibilities.
