Welcome Home! It’s nice to hear that, isn’t it? Well, you are home now – back home to a special state of mind.
When we left our home at U High in 1963, most of us weren’t exactly certain how the whole “future thing” was
supposed to work. The whole world was out there for us – consisting of at least “50-something” different
directions. Some had specific commitments, some had vague plans, others had dreams and high hopes. But, we all
had something in common – the bond of our years together at U High. It was the common bond of shared
experiences, but like all kids at that age, we were generally myopic about our long-term relationships with
classmates. After all, high school graduation was about moving forward, moving out, moving on – that’s why they
call it commencement.
We made the typical pledges of high school seniors to keep in touch and stay close. But, time and distance,
fueled by those same uncertain hopes, dreams and plans, made it tougher to do than any of us could have
imagined. Over the years we tried. We had some good get-togethers…collectively and unilaterally, and contact
was maintained.
But, the 40th anniversary of graduating U High seems to have become a rallying point for the Class of 1963.
More than previous reunions, the 40th Reunion experience gave us all a genuine insight into the concept of
actually reuniting. A loosely knit group of confederates in 1963 appears to have become a more tightly knit
group of people experiencing re-emerging friendships, associations and the strengthening of common bonds that
tend to blossom with maturity. Try explaining that to a bunch of 18-year olds!
The intervening years have changed us, and we have changed this world to greater and lesser degrees, with our
own lives. Not all of our classmates are here to share today with us. We’ve lost some along the way, and their
absence is noted with regret. Those of us here can benefit from forty years of technological advances in
communication and honor those high school commitments to keep in touch and more.
That’s the purpose of this site. It’s a place to hang out, chat, and be yourself. It’s not just about who we were,
but it’s also about who we’ve become. It’s a demonstration of human curiosity about the process of growth and
maturity – about life. For now you may see it as the U High ’63 Web site. Please think of it as home.
How many of these people can you name?
